A Day Without a Mexican. Share. And a movie without a direction. By Andy Patrizio A Day Without a Mexican is not just the unofficial theme movie of IGN LA (used to describe days when a certain PITA editor isn't here), it's a low- budget indie film that is brilliant in concept but lousy in execution. Had a major studio possessed the pelotas to tackle the concept and gotten some B+ to A- list talent, it could have been a really great movie. Instead, the film is brought down by a combination of third- rate acting and writing/direction, not to mention a truly condescending attitude. Its roots stem from writer/star Yareli Arizmendi commenting to her husband, director Sergio Arau, "imagine a day without a Mexican for these people." She said this while they were in New York, but the film is set in California. The two did the film as a short film in 1. One evening, a peculiar fog rolls in over California and completely surrounds the state. The fog, which has a lovely pink tint to it, stops at the borders to Mexico, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona and completely blocks all transmissions in and out of the state. It's completely cut off. Even stranger is that people are disappearing. You'd think it was The Rapture, except all of the people vanishing are Mexican. Within a day, all are gone but one, a half- Mexican TV reporter named Lila Rodriguez (Arizmendi). Conspiracy theories abound as to why the Mexicans are gone, but more important, California is falling apart. Why, within one day of all the Mexican laborers disappearing all of the crops are going to be lost. Agriculture is California's number one export, not Hollywood, don't you know. If you don't, it will be pounded into your head with all the subtlety of an afterschool special. The A Day Without a Mexican DVD Menu. Naturally we have the stereotypes like the white anti- immigrant character and the corrupt border agents. ![]() One morning, California wakes up to find that one-third of its population -- the Hispanic third -- has disappeared in this unusual comedy. Watch trailers & learn more. · Does the American economy really need low-skilled, low-wage Mexican immigrants? We sure do, according to the 2004 film A Day Without a Mexican. The. · Arriving with a surprising amount of notoriety due to controversy from a billboard promotion, "A Day Without a Mexican" is a satire that is more bemusing. But they don't stop there. Among the lunkheads in this film is Aunt Gigi (Caroline Aaron), from the white side of Lila's family, and racist state senator Steven Abercombie III (John Getz), who becomes acting Governor when the Governor is out of state and the Lieutenant Governor, a Mexican, disappears. Aaron's performance is terrible as she tries to help the last surviving Mexican in California, while Getz gives a performance worthy of a first- year acting school student. Aside from the fact there isn't a single decent or likeable character, the film makes two insulting assumptions. First, that white people can't survive without Mexicans. I can wash my own car without descending into something out of a monkey cage, as portrayed here, and I have the utmost confidence that my folks can maintain and repair their own home. Some of those low- rated cable channels can't afford much for their news. But it also presumes that every Mexican in California is a manual laborer. I've had a doctor who is Mexican, my taxes prepared by a Mexican, have known school teachers of Mexican descent with perfect command of the English language, and so on. Yes, they make up a large portion of the California labor force, but they are also a measurable chunk of our educated, professional labor force, too. What was my most recent review? Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The verdict? The best Potter film yet. Check out the exclusive TVGuide.com movie review and see our movie rating for A Day Without A Mexican. They called it the Great American Boycott, where everyone (especially Latin Americans) was encouraged to check out of capitalist culture for a day. The director? Alfonso Cuaron, from Mexico. I rest my case. A Day Without a Mexican can't decide if it wants to be a mockumentary or a social statement, but either way, it doesn't do work well. Score: 2 out of 1. We'd need more than just the Mexicans to vanish for this to happen. The Video. A Day Without a Mexican is presented in 1. There are some serious aliasing issues around curves, especially on a pan shots. The resolution is not very good, so there's hardly any fine detail to be had. Some of it looks like it was shot with camcorders, and if you watch the making- of featurette, they look it. Color levels are generally ok, although some skin tones were really pink. There's more of a problem with lighting than the transfer. Black levels are a little murky but nothing severe. Quite frankly, with the low quality of the video it's hard to tell if there was any edge enhancement to begin with, but I doubt they had the budget for much post- production behind Adobe Premiere and a few G4s. Score: 3 out of 1. Boy they are desperate to latch onto some names in this flick. Languages and Audio The movie offers both an English and Spanish Dolby Stereo 2. Spanish subtitles (um, why?). Again, the performance suffers from the poor quality of the recording more than from the DVD technology. Voices are not that clear, and often sound distant. I suspect the actors weren't miked, because the sound track, full of Mexican songs and bad covers of American songs, comes through a lot stronger and clearer. There's no real hiss or distortion, but forget any positional audio or dynamic range, as it's all coming from the center channel. Score: 4 out of 1. Looks like my place. Packaging and Extras. A Day Without a Mexican comes in an Amaray keep case with an insert listing the chapters. When you first insert the disc, you can choose between the English and Spanish tracks. The biggest extra is Behind& #Array; A Day Without a Mexican. The interviews are mostly in Spanish (subtitled in English), even with non- Hispanic people, although there's a lot of English, too. Arau and Arizmendi discuss the origins of the story and then spend more time justifying their feelings than talking about the movie. Ok, we get it, we get it! There's not a lot to be gained by this featurette, although looking at the sets and equipment, it's obvious how cheaply this film was done. It runs 2. 2 minutes, but once the English version is done, the Spanish version starts. So they stuck both the English and Spanish versions together in one 4. There are two deleted scenes, neither of which was a big loss. You also get a music video for "Sin Decir Adios" from the band Los Yoguis, the original 3. Score: 4 out of 1.
